Every piece we make is 925 sterling silver underneath. Over that goes a layer of 21k gold, or rhodium if you chose the white finish. So when someone asks whether the gold will last, the honest answer involves two different metals doing two different things.
Gold does not tarnish. It sits near the bottom of the reactivity scale and ignores air and water almost entirely. Silver does tarnish, and fairly readily, but only when air can reach it. Which means plated jewellery doesn't fail by chemistry first. It fails by wear. The gold thins at the points that rub, air finds the silver underneath, and a grey shadow appears.
Once that clicks, everything else about looking after it makes sense.
Why this city is harder on plating
Karachi hands you two problems at once.
Humidity is the first. Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air to form silver sulphide, which is the black film you see on neglected cutlery. That reaction needs moisture to move along, and we spend most of the year humid. The monsoon months are worse.
Salt is the second. Coastal air carries chloride, and chloride is aggressive toward any base metal it can reach. Living closer to the sea probably does shorten the interval between replatings, though I wouldn't want to oversell the size of that difference for ordinary daily wear.
Then there is you, which is the part nobody expects. Skin chemistry varies enormously. Two people can buy the same ring in the same week; one looks new a year later and the other has worn through the back of the band. Diet, medication, how much you sweat, how acidic your skin runs. It's the largest single variable and we can't predict it from our end.
Where it goes first
Always the contact points, and almost always in the same order.
On a ring, the underside of the band, where it presses against the fingers either side. On a chain, the links that sit at the back of the neck under a collar. On earrings, the post. On a bangle, the inner face that rides over the wrist bone.
Broad flat surfaces that touch nothing hold their finish for years. It's why a pendant that never leaves your chest can look untouched while the chain carrying it has gone dull.
Rhodium holds up better than gold
That isn't a preference, it's just physics. Rhodium is a platinum-group metal, harder than gold plating and chemically inert on top of that. It doesn't tarnish and it resists scratching well. For one piece you intend to wear every day without thinking about it, rhodium is the more durable finish.
The catch is obvious. It's white. If you want gold, you accept somewhat faster wear in exchange, and most people happily do. That's a trade, not a compromise.
What we do about it
We treat plating wear as maintenance, because that's what it is. Every piece includes one free polish and replate. After that we replate at heavily subsidised cost for as long as you own it.
Send the piece back when it starts looking tired. A replate returns it to the finish it had on day one, because it's the same process run again, by the same karigars who made it. There's no limit on how many times a piece can go through this.
